Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator
Introduction to BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) refers to the energy metabolism rate of the human body in an awake but extremely quiet state, unaffected by muscle activity, ambient temperature, food, and mental tension. It's the amount of energy required to maintain basic bodily functions like breathing, heartbeat, and cellular activity. Variations within 15% of the normal value are considered normal. BMR decreases during prolonged hunger or malnutrition, and also decreases with age.
BMR measurement is a primary auxiliary method for clinical diagnosis of thyroid diseases. BMR can significantly increase with hyperthyroidism and significantly decrease with hypothyroidism. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula is used here because it is one of the most commonly used and reliable BMR estimation methods.
BMR Calculation Formula
Male:
BMR = Weight (kg) * 10 + Height (cm) * 6.25 - Age (years) * 5 + 5
Female:
BMR = Weight (kg) * 10 + Height (cm) * 6.25 - Age (years) * 5 - 161
What is Basal Metabolism
Basal metabolism refers to the minimum energy required for the body to maintain normal organ function. In simple terms, it's the calories your body burns at complete rest to keep your heart beating, lungs breathing, and body temperature stable. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the numerical measurement of this consumption rate, typically expressed in kcal/day.
Basal metabolism accounts for 60%-75% of total daily energy expenditure, making it the largest source of calorie consumption. Understanding your BMR is crucial for scientific weight loss, muscle gain, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Is High or Low BMR Better?
Both high and low BMR have their pros and cons:
Benefits of High BMR:
- Burns calories more easily, less prone to weight gain
- Higher BMR means more calories burned naturally each day
- Better weight loss results, easier to maintain ideal weight
- More energetic, higher physical activity levels
Risks of Abnormally High BMR:
- May signal hyperthyroidism or other conditions
- Excessive energy consumption may lead to malnutrition
- Difficulty gaining weight, increased risk of muscle loss
Issues with Low BMR:
- Prone to fat accumulation, easy to gain weight
- May be related to hypothyroidism
- Slower metabolism makes weight loss more difficult
- Easy to feel fatigued and low on energy
Summary: Within normal ranges, a slightly higher BMR is beneficial for weight control. However, both abnormally high and low BMR values warrant medical attention.
Normal BMR Range
The normal BMR range varies by age, gender, weight, height, and body fat percentage. Generally, values within ±15% of the normal range are considered normal. Below are the reference ranges for Chinese adults:
Normal BMR Range for Adult Males:
- Age 18-30: Approximately 1500-1800 kcal/day
- Age 30-50: Approximately 1400-1700 kcal/day
- Age 50+: Approximately 1300-1600 kcal/day
Normal BMR Range for Adult Females:
- Age 18-30: Approximately 1200-1500 kcal/day
- Age 30-50: Approximately 1100-1400 kcal/day
- Age 50+: Approximately 1000-1300 kcal/day
Note: The above are estimated normal ranges with individual variation. BMR gradually declines with age, dropping approximately 2%-5% per decade after age 30.
How to Increase BMR
Increasing your BMR helps your body burn calories more efficiently. Here are scientifically proven methods:
- Build Muscle Mass — Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue. Each kilogram of added muscle can increase daily calorie expenditure by about 100 kcal. Aim for 2-3 strength training sessions per week.
- Ensure Adequate Protein Intake — Protein has the highest thermic effect of food (20%-30%), meaning digesting protein itself burns significant calories. Recommended daily intake: 1.2-2.0g per kg of body weight.
- Get Enough Sleep — Lack of sleep can lower BMR and increase hunger. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per day.
- Stay Hydrated — Drinking water can temporarily boost metabolic rate by 10%-30% for about an hour. Aim for 1.5-2 liters of water daily; cold water is more effective.
- Do High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) — HIIT can elevate metabolic rate for up to 24 hours after exercise (afterburn effect). 2-3 HIIT sessions per week can be very effective.
- Avoid Extreme Dieting — Prolonged low-calorie diets can reduce BMR by 10%-20%. Keep daily calorie intake at least 120% of your BMR.
- Increase Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) — Small daily activities like walking, standing while working, and housework can significantly increase daily calorie expenditure. Aim for 8000-10000 steps per day.

Measurement Guide & Tips
Height Measurement
Correct height measurement is important for calculating BMI and body fat percentage.
- Stand straight with heels, buttocks, and shoulders against the wall
- Measure without shoes, looking straight ahead
- Use a height meter or mark on the wall and measure with a tape
- Morning height is 1-2 cm taller than evening height
Recommended Tools:
Weight Measurement
Accurate weight measurement is fundamental for calculating BMI and body fat percentage.
- Measure in the morning on an empty stomach, after using the bathroom
- Wear light clothing, no shoes
- Measure at the same time each day for consistency
- Place the scale on a hard, flat surface, avoid carpets
Recommended Tools:
Waist Measurement
Waist circumference is a key parameter for body fat calculation, accurate measurement is crucial.
- Stand relaxed with feet shoulder-width apart
- Find your navel and measure at that level
- The tape should touch the skin but not be tight
- Breathe normally during measurement, don't hold in or push out your stomach
- Morning measurement on an empty stomach is more accurate
