Normal Body Fat Range

Body fat percentage refers to the proportion of fat mass in total body weight and is one of the key indicators of health. The normal range varies by gender and age.

Normal Body Fat Range for Males:

  • Essential fat: 2% - 5% (minimum fat required for basic physiological functions)
  • Athletic: 6% - 13% (common among professional athletes)
  • Healthy: 14% - 17% (ideal for healthy adult males)
  • Acceptable: 18% - 24% (still within healthy range, but worth monitoring)
  • Obese: 25% and above (exceeds healthy range, fat loss recommended)

Normal Body Fat Range for Females:

  • Essential fat: 10% - 13% (minimum fat required for basic physiological functions)
  • Athletic: 14% - 20% (common among professional female athletes)
  • Healthy: 21% - 24% (ideal for healthy adult females)
  • Acceptable: 25% - 31% (still within healthy range, but worth monitoring)
  • Obese: 32% and above (exceeds healthy range, fat loss recommended)

Note: The above are general reference ranges with significant individual variation. Too low body fat may cause hormonal imbalance and weakened immunity; too high increases risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions. Maintain a healthy body fat level through balanced diet and regular exercise.

Body Fat Calculation Formula

1. Adult Male Body Fat Calculation Formula:

  • Parameter a = Waist (cm) × 0.74
  • Parameter b = Weight (kg) × 0.082 + 44.74
  • Body Fat Mass (kg) = a - b
  • Body Fat Percentage = (Body Fat Mass ÷ Weight) × 100%

2. Adult Female Body Fat Calculation Formula:

  • Parameter a = Waist (cm) × 0.74
  • Parameter b = Weight (kg) × 0.082 + 34.89
  • Body Fat Mass (kg) = a - b
  • Body Fat Percentage = (Body Fat Mass ÷ Weight) × 100%

Generally, the ideal body fat percentage for men under 30 is 14-20%, and for men over 30 is 17-23%. For women under 30, it's 17-24%, and for women over 30, it's 20-27%. If men's body fat exceeds 25% or women's exceeds 30%, please consult a doctor.

Body fat percentage categories (ACE)

These are the American Council on Exercise fitness categories. They are reference bands, not diagnostic thresholds — there is no physiological switch at 24% versus 25%, and one reading on its own is never a diagnosis.

Why men and women have different essential-fat floors

Essential fat is the minimum required for normal physiological function: 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women. The gap exists because women carry fat in breast, pelvic and thigh tissue for reproductive function. Dropping below it is a medical problem, not a fitness achievement — which is why the athlete band starts at 14% for women but 6% for men.

What counts as healthy

The span usually quoted as healthy combines the fitness and average bands: 21–31% for women and 14–24% for men. Above roughly 32% for women and 25% for men, most authorities stop treating body fat as the primary measure and switch to waist circumference or waist-to-height ratio, because where fat is carried predicts risk better than how much of it there is.

What a waist-based estimate cannot tell you

The calculator above uses height, weight, waist and sex. That is a reasonable population-level estimate and a weak individual one: it cannot separate subcutaneous from visceral fat, it drifts badly for very muscular people, and it is not validated for children, pregnancy or adults over about 65. If a number is going to drive a clinical decision, use a method that measures tissue directly — DXA, hydrostatic weighing, air displacement — or, more usefully and far more cheaply, track your waist.

Measurement Guide & Tips

Height Measurement

Correct height measurement is important for calculating BMI and body fat percentage.

  • Stand straight with heels, buttocks, and shoulders against the wall
  • Measure without shoes, looking straight ahead
  • Use a height meter or mark on the wall and measure with a tape
  • Morning height is 1-2 cm taller than evening height

Weight Measurement

Accurate weight measurement is fundamental for calculating BMI and body fat percentage.

  • Measure in the morning on an empty stomach, after using the bathroom
  • Wear light clothing, no shoes
  • Measure at the same time each day for consistency
  • Place the scale on a hard, flat surface, avoid carpets

Waist Measurement

Waist circumference is a key parameter for body fat calculation, accurate measurement is crucial.

  • Stand relaxed with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Find your navel and measure at that level
  • The tape should touch the skin but not be tight
  • Breathe normally during measurement, don't hold in or push out your stomach
  • Morning measurement on an empty stomach is more accurate

Data sources and how we verify them

Every cut-point, band and formula on this page is taken from the issuing authority's own document, listed below. We do not use second-hand summaries, and we do not fill gaps with numbers no source states.

Cut-points are population-level statistical thresholds, not individual diagnoses. If your value sits near a category line, measure your waist as well and read it alongside body-fat percentage. Last checked: 2026-09-15.
